Speech and Motion Book Club: Itsy Bitsy Spider
Welcome to the Speech & Motion Book Club! Every month we feature fun, exciting, and creative books to spark your children’s imagination and offer some fresh suggestions for your reading routines.
Book of the Month: Itsy Bitsy Spider
Great for language delayed toddlers
Using books that have a corresponding song work great with toddlers that aren’t interested in being read to, but do enjoy music. Start by singing the song and doing any motions or gestures that may correspond with it. Once the child’s attention is gained, pull out the book and point to the pictures that correspond to the words you are singing.
We particularly love this book as it also provides a sensory bonus with interactive touch and trace shapes on every page. Other classic nursery rhymes featured in this book are:
- Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear- encourages following directions and gross motor skills, such as jumping & touching toes
- Six Little Ducks- this library story time leader has some great moves to go with the song!
- Two Little Bluebirds- try incorporating finger play with this song, as seen here.
- This Little Piggy- don’t forget your little one’s toes and a playful “wee wee all the way home”!
Author Annie Kubler has a wonderful selection of additional books featuring classic songs, including some of our other favorites Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, If Your Happy & You Know It, and Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes.
