Back to School & Book Club Time!
It’s back to school time! At Speech & Motion Therapy, we are winding down the summer and welcoming our little friends to our new location for a new season of fun and learning. As we kick off an exciting new school year, we are also taking the time to reflect on the trying times our community faced one year ago as Hurricane Harvey struck the gulf coast.
In the year since Harvey, we’ve seen people come together to support each other and help rebuild our great city. We witnessed countless examples of kindness, hope and generosity in the face of great adversity, but one of our favorite memories was the touching performance of “Lean on Me” from a Houston gospel choir on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, after the host graciously donated $1 Million to JJ Watt’s relief fund.
As if we need another reason to love Jimmy Fallon, he is also the New York Times Best Selling author of two children’s books Your Baby’s First Word Will Be DADA and Everything is MAMA, our choices for this month’s Speech & Motion Therapy Book Club!
The simplistic, repetitive style of these books are perfect for babies and language delayed toddlers. The bright pictures featured in both of the stories gain toddler’s attention. The “Dada” book provides children the opportunity to model environmental sounds as animals hilariously frustrate their dads with only saying their respective animal sound instead of “dada.” The “Mama” book follows a similar simple, repetitive style, while also introducing basic vocabulary words, such as “balloon” and “noodles.”
In the words of Fallon, if you have a three-year-old, they’ll love the pictures. And if you have a one-year-old, they’ll love how it tastes. Either way, these books are sure to be a hit and a fun read-aloud in any household.
Follow along each month on our blog or Facebook page as our Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists share their favorite books.
